Between 2014 and 2016 more than 65,000 addicts cycled through Vietnam's state-sponsored drug rehab centres, usually a mix of compulsory patients sent by police with those admitted by exasperated relatives. Switzerland's Edelweiss to commence flights to Sri Lanka:

Intl lawyers' group express solidarity with Filipino people for just peace and against tyranny:

The International Association of Democratic Lawyers passed a resolution on November 30 in its meeting in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam to 'urge the Philippine government to commit to end extrajudicial killings in the "war against illegal drugs"' and 'end extrajudicial killings, illegal arrests and other human rights violations against the people and members of people's organizations.' The resolution also called for the respect of international human rights and international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of human rights defenders, including human rights lawyers.

Vietnam legislature removes senior party official:

Vietnam's National Assembly removed a senior Communist Party official from its membership on Friday, state media said, in a move that could pave the way for his prosecution for alleged wrongdoing while head of energy giant PetroVietnam. The official Vietnam News Agency reported that the assembly's Standing Committee voted to remove Dinh La Thang from the Communist Party-dominated legislature.



Vietnam assembly expels ex-top official over misconduct - report:

Vietnam's National Assembly on Friday expelled a former top Communist Party official suspected of misconduct while he was chairman of the main state energy firm, state media reported. Lawmakers agreed unanimously at an extraordinary meeting to remove Dinh La Thang, 56, a former powerful politburo official, from the assembly, state-run Vietnam News Agency reported on its website.



UPDATE 1-Vietnam signs crude oil supply deals with SOCAR, Glencore:

Vietnam's state-run Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Co and state oil marketer PV Oil have signed initial agreements with two western trading companies for annual crude supplies, officials from the refinery said on Friday. SOCAR Trading will provide 3 million barrels a month of Azeri Light crude and 2 million barrels a month of other types of crude to Binh Son's Dung Quat refinery between 2018 and 2021, the officials said.



Forecasters warn up to 6 inches of snow could fall in Boston this weekend:

The season's first snowfall in Boston may not be as light as it was forecast to be earlier this week, according to projections released by the National Weather Service Thursday. New forecasts now suggest the potential of 3 to 6 inches of snowfall in the Boston-Providence corridor and into the northeastern corner of the state, from Friday night to Sunday morning, the weather service said.

Vietnam's folk singing wins UNESCO recognition:

Bai Choi singing, a folk music genre practiced in Vietnam's central region, on Thursday was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The recognition was made during the 12th session of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in South Korea on Thursday, Vietnam News Agency reported.
