APEC Strives For Streamlined Food Export Regulations:

HO CHI MINH CITY, Aug 18 -- The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Committee on Trade and Investment started gathering here on Friday, seeking measures to ease bottlenecks to safe and efficient food trade between APEC member economies, China's Xinhua news agency reported. Policymakers must ensure that foreign products do not harm local consumers, crops or livestock, but too many regulatory requirements limit regulators' ability to guarantee the safety of food imports and bury food exporters in administrative red tape, according to an APEC study of non-tariff barriers in agriculture and food trade.

3rd APEC senior officials meeting to open in Vietnam's HCM City:

The third Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Senior Officials' Meeting and related meetings will take place in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City from Aug. 18 to Aug. 30, the country's foreign ministry announced here Thursday. Besides SOM 3 slated for Aug. 29 to Aug. 30, there will be 74 meetings of four committees and 26 working and sub-working groups in various fields, including trade and investment, business facilitation, science, technology and innovation, and anti-corruption, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Miss Vietnam 2016 to attend Miss World 2017 in China:

Do My Linh, Miss Vietnam 2016, has been chosen to represent Vietnam at the approaching Miss World 2017 in China, Vietnam's national beauty contest organizers announced here on Thursday. At a press conference on Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City, Linh said she has recently improved her catwalk and performance skills, command of English, and physical strength so that she can be more confident at the coming Miss World slated for Nov. 18. The 1.71-meter girl said she is implementing a project to help local children affected by Agent Orange/dioxin.

A pilot project using low carbon emission light-emitting diode bulbs will light up 19 main downtown streets in Da Nang as the central coastal city prepares for the high-profile 2017 Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Economic Leaders Week, Vietnam News Agency reported. Nearly 3,000 high-voltage bulbs -- five per cent of the city's total public lighting system -- will be replaced by the LED public lighting system, beginning this September, and go operational in October.

Four Vietnamese drug traffickers get death, life sentences:

A Vietnamese court handed down a death sentence on a 34-year-old leader of a trans-provincial drug trafficking ring and life imprisonment on three of his underlings, local media reported Wednesday. The court in southern Binh Duong province on Tuesday passed the death penalty on Do Xuan Loi from central Thua Thien Hue province, and the three life sentences on three other men from central Binh Thuan province, southern An Giang province, and Ho Chi Minh City, including an elder brother of Loi's wife, daily newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.

Vietnam's National Wage Council has announced that the regional minimum wage may rise by 6.5 per cent in 2018 to VND180,000-230,000 a month following a consensus reached between employer and labour representatives. The rate will be submitted to the government for approval.
